At this time of year, we are reminded of the importance of family, and of giving and of receiving. These are things that transcend religion, nationality and even culture.
This is the time of year when we realise how valuable our families are, and how precious moments such as the exchanging of presents can bring such happiness and delight on the faces of loved ones.
We have chosen to live on this island, which means that we are part of the fabric of Phuket society. We are part of the larger Phuket family. We have a responsibility to take care of each other.
Not just those who attend the same parties as us, wear the same white shirts or drink from the same bottle of spirit. Everyone. You have chosen to live here. Respect your family.
With stunning beaches, fabulous scenery and great weather, Phuket is an amiable host who tries hard to please but sometimes struggles to accommodate all its visitors.
Like mother on Christmas Day who suddenly discovers there’s a vegetarian coming to dinner, it does its best to cook up something to serve its new arrivals and to make everybody feel at home.
Indeed, for many Phuket is the gift that keeps on giving. This month alone we have the Patong Carnival, the annual Electronic Music and Dance Festival and the Surin Sydictive mega party.
So what have you done for Phuket lately? Have you given to charities? Have you collected any rubbish from beaches? Have you got rid of that ridiculous gas guzzling SUV yet?
At this present-filled time, we should all remember that Christmas is also the time for giving.
Merry Christmas.
