The Phuket protest followed one held in Bangkok on Thursday, where several hundred Muslims, many waving banners and shouting “execute people who mock Islam”, rallied outside the US embassy and Google offices in Bangkok Thursday.

A procession of demonstrators later petitioned internet giant Google, asking the company to ban the film, which was hosted on its video sharing site YouTube.

But the Phuket event was far more peaceful, and was organised by Ma-an Samran, the Chief of the Or Bor Tor Cherng Talay, along with Mureed Timasane, an academic specialist from the White Channel (Muslim TV) and Paisan Promyong, the president of the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand.

A student representative, Muhammad Ridwan, from the Muslim Relations Club of the Prince of Songkhla University also attended.

The main purpose for the protest was to show the community’s resistance to the movie, as well as passing on a complaint to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology or MICT through Vice Governor Jamroen Tippayapongdara who also attended the protest.

Unlike the Bangkok protest, Mr Paisan told The Phuket News that the Phuket protest was a peaceful one, and he believed there would be many other protests like this around Thailand.

“This event is mainly to pass on a letter of complaint to the vice governor to stop all websites showing this movie.”

“We have specialists here to explain to people what is happening, and how to express their opinions on the film in a positive way. There have been many gatherings of Muslim people in other areas in Thailand about this movie, but we think that Phuket is a place that has a large Muslim community, and a lot of international travellers.

"We want the foreign tourists to see as well that Muslim people around the world object to this movie.”
