“We expect more than 2,600 people to join the event this year,” Thirapan “Bella” Narongkool, Public Relations Manager at the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach, which is organising the event, told attendees at the Governor Meets the Press event at Phuket Provincial Hall.
“Running is becoming an increasingly popular way of keeping fit and healthy, and last year 90 per cent of the people who took part were Thai,” she added.
As any runner who took part last year will know, the “Heartbreak Hill” refers to the many steep ascents in the Naithon-Layan area during the race, considered difficult for the runners.
It is not only elevation change which makes a hill tough but there is also the rate at which that change happens and at what point in the race, which also make a big difference.
The event comprises a 10.5km mini-marathon and a 5km fun run. For both events, trophies will be awarded to the first five to cross the line in both the men’s and women’s categories, with a special gift prize for each male and female first-place winner.
All runners to complete the 10.5km course will receive medals, as will the first 1,200 runners to cross the finish line in the fun run. Also, the first 1,800 runners to enter the fun run will receive a souvenir shirt.
Other prizes include a “gift prize” for the most creative “Back to school” costumes as well as trophies for the three “groups” to enter with the most participants. There will also be lucky draws to win gift vouchers.
In addition to encouraging people to stay healthy and exercise, the Heartbreak Hill run aims to raise funds to support improving education and well-being of underprivileged children in local schools in Phuket and nearby provinces as part of the Accor Yim Kids Project.
Yim Kids was launched in Thailand in 2006 with the mission of improving the well-being of underprivileged children through the provision of healthcare aid as well as access to education.
Entry to the mini-marathon is B350 per person, while entry to the fun run is B250.
Registration can be entered online (click here) or at any or in person at any Accor hotel on the island, or in the Andaman area, until Sept 15.
Last minute entries can be made on race day from 4:30am–5:45am at registration area near the start line at the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach. The running will start at 6am.
