Mr Sutad said, “The new electrical transformer station was built using 230 kilovolt (kv) cables which will connect Krabi, Phang Nga and Phuket.”
This station will work alongside the two existing 230/115kV transformer stations that are already operating in Phuket and Phang Nga provinces.
The high-voltage stations have been built at a cost of B1.6 billion.
The third electrical transformer station will effectively support the tourism and business industry by providing much-needed electricity in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi.
The primary cable of Phuket – where the island gets the majority of its power – only has a capacity of 115 kilovolts (kV) and is 98 kilometres long. This makes the voltage inconsistent and prone to cut-outs.
Mr Sutad added, “The EGAT has set a budget of B500 million to increase Phuket’s electricity supply from 350 megawatts to 600 megawatts in the next 5-10 years.
“The ultimate plan is for Surat Thani station to transfer 500 MW to Phuket in the future. This will bring it up to a national standard.”
