O-Resus negative is very rare among Asians, with only 0.3 per cent of Thai people having the blood type, which makes it especially important for foreigners to donate.

On Wednesday, Vachira Hospital Phuket made an announcement calling for donations of the blood type as a foreign man needed it urgently.

“After the news was announced, there were quite a lot of people who came to the centre,” said Vathu O-art from the PRBC.

“But there is still a shortage and we need more O-Resus negative blood.”

She also listed the requirements for anyone with this blood type who wanted to donate:

  • They must have lived in Phuket for more than six months

  • Minimum weight of 45kg

  • Aged between 17 to 60 years old (first time donor must be younger than 55 years old)

  • Healthy, with no illnesses and not taking any medication

  • Has not had unprotected sex or have any sexually transmitted diseases, or drug addiction

  • Not menstruating, pregnant or lactating, and no childbirth or miscarriage within the past six months
