Airport Director Pratueng Sornkham told The Phuket News today (April 17) that security had been increased as usual over the Songkran period, due to the large numbers of visitor arrivals.
But the Boston bombings in the United States yesterday have prompted Phuket officials to raise security measures, and the airport has increased the number of airport staff and security guards.
“The other things we have done are confidential,” Mr Pratueng said.
“With regard to the Boston bombings, I don’t think it will affect Phuket, because I don’t think the island is a target for terrorism, unlike capital cities where a bomb would have more affect on the people.”
“Phuket is safer for tourists than mainland Thailand. That’s our selling point. But we have increased the airport security for tourists anyway.”
