Patong seal fourth win of series, Island get their first

CRICKET: There was more action in this season’s Outrigger T20 competition at the Alan Cooke Ground last Sunday (Sept 25). In this fourth round of the season, the early game saw Thalang Cricket Team (TCT) playing host to the league leaders Patong Cricket Club (PCC).

After winning the toss PCC elected to bat first, putting S Hamilton and A Runhaar in as the opening pair. Opening the bowling for TCT were M Rehman and M Odenaal, but neither could find the early breakthrough they wanted.

In the sixth over Dave Watson was brought into the attack and his very first ball troubled Runhaar with a close LBW shout, followed by a mix-up which left him stranded only to be run out for 10. Another change in bowling meant new batsman, P Ledeboer was facing some very tight bowling from R Jayasuriya .

Hamilton was dismissed for 20 in the next over by a well-disguised slower ball from Watson. With H Jordaan now at the crease, this pair started to score some quick runs, until Watson bowled not only Ledeboer for 26, but also following batsman S Gaur for 0, with two carbon copy slower balls, leaving A Simmons to face a hat trick ball. Unfortunately for Watson it wasn’t to be and he was fended off. At drinks PCC were 72-4.

After drinks the run rate slowed down with only 15 runs coming from the next three overs, but crucially for PCC no wickets fell.

In the 14th and 15th overs C Murphy and a young local player, Pao, came into the attack to try and break the deadlock. This tactic worked for TCT as they both picked up wickets straight away. Simmons being caught for 7 and N Quail shortly after, LBW for 1.

H McDonald joined Jordaan and in no time they scored a partnership of 37, with McDonald scoring 20 before getting out LBW. P Jha and Murphy cleaned up the tail end, A Van Blerk for 2, and S Raju for 1. Jordaan finished not out 44 and the score after T20 overs, 151-9.

C Baxter and Jha came out to open the batting for TCT, whilst S Bhattacharya and Mcdonald were given the honours with the ball.

It was Bhattacharya who struck first, claiming the wicket of Jha in the 3rd over for 10.

But TCT soon gained control as Watson started to give the fielders the run around, scoring freely until the 9th over when he was caught off the bowling of Raju for 39. Ruhnaar then claimed the wicket of Jayasuriya for 4 in the next over making it 75-3 at drinks.

Not long after drinks Baxter was bowled by Ruhnaar for 11. This brought out Rehman who was hoping to score some big runs, but his hopes were short lived as Jordaan got his 1st victim bowling him for 5.

I Bekker and Pao could only manage 1 as Simmons got his 1st wicket and Jordaan his 2nd.

At 91-7 TCT looked to be down and out, but Murphy and Odenaal proved there was a little bit of sting left in the tail putting on a 30 run partnership.

Eventually Murphy fell fowl to Quail for 11 and Odenaal to Jordan for 14. This left M Mohammad at the crease at 0 not out.

PCC won 20 runs extending their lead at the top of the table.

In the day’s second game, Island Cricket Club (ICC) took on Laguna Cricket Club (LCC) in a classic match with ICC winning the toss and electing to bat first.

ICC started well and were on track for a nice score as they were in the 50s with only two wickets down. However, an unlucky wicket fell just before the break. But none the less, they were confident they could up their rate in the remaining ten overs as Laguna had not really made any big damage in the starting batting order.

Just after the drinks break, R Cooper made an amazing diving catch, J Prakash took four wickets and swing sensation M Kohler took a further three wickets, wiping out ICC’s middle and most of their lower order batsmen and bringing Laguna back into the game

ICC hung on to reach a reasonable 114 after the 20 overs with Ravi and Divan and Darshan being the pick of their batsmen.

LCC started slowly with their innings and it stayed like that for a while with wickets constantly falling. That was until A Khan took to the crease as 6th batsmen with the score at 43 for 4. On his first ball Khan smashed the ball for six proving why he is seen by many as the most explosive batter in the league.

When Khan fell with the score at 76 Laguna looked to be on the way to a win, but with ICC’s bowling juggernaut Surrinder taking five wickets in short succession ICC still looked like they were in with a chance.

When the 2nd to last wicket fell J Friedrichs walked to the crease, and it was down to him and R Cooper to see if they could reach 22 runs from the remaining four overs and give Laguna the win.

Friedrichs held his own against some tough bowling from ICC and the crowd were eager to see if ICC could finally get to beat their arch nemesis Laguna.

But with only a few balls remaining Cooper was caught on the boundary giving ICC their first win of the series.
