Inspector Pol Maj Urumporn Koondejsumrit said the mobile phone app “Tourist Buddy” was launched two months ago across Thailand.
The free app includes an emergency call button, a “send location” option, important phone numbers, and dos and don’ts about Thai culture.
There is also a news feed with news about the Tourist Police, but this is in Thai language only. Users are encouraged to register their details with the app first before using it.
The Phuket Tourist Police have already promoted the app in Patong through an information booth at Patong Beach and by giving away information brochures. They plan on carrying out more promotion at Phuket International Airport and around the island’s beaches.
“Already in Bangkok there have been cases of tourists reporting a robbery through Tourist Buddy and the police have been able to arrest the thief,” Maj Urumporn told The Phuket News.
“At the moment the app is only available for iPhones, but within one or two months it will be available for all smartphones,” Maj Urumporn said.
