Police were notified of the incident at 2pm on Tuesday that a 70-year-old Chinese tourist had died after being swept onto rocks by strong waves at Kata Beach, but by the time police arrived with Ruamjai rescue workers, the man, identified as Su Fuhai from Beijing, was unresponsive on the beach.
It was stated in the police report that attempts were made to revive Mr Su, but he remained unresponsive. (See story here.)
Chief of the Phuket Lifeguard Club, Prathaiyuth Chuayuan, told The Phuket News yesterday (July 27), “We don’t know what exactly happened to Mr Su at the beach. Lifeguards stationed at Kata beach launched a search after they were alerted by beachgoers that they saw a man disappear whilst he was walking on the rocks.
“The coastal area where they found Mr Su was not in an area where lifeguards patrol nor near their station. In addition, no one was with him at the time he disappeared. At this stage we are not sure if he slipped and fell or if he drowned,” he said.
Prathaiyuth pointed out that there was no rough waves that day that would severely injure someone.
“I don’t think he was hit by a wave onto the rocks as reported. All we can do is let doctors determine the cause of death,” he said.
Meanwhile, Maj Patiwat Yodkwan of the Karon Police told The Phuket News, “We have yet to conclude what had happened to Mr Su who was found unconscious on the rocks at Kata Beach on July 26. We are waiting for doctors to confirm the cause of death.
“We received a call after 2pm on July26 where it was said that a foreigner had drowned off Kata beach. When we arrived with Ruamjai rescue workers, the man, identified as Su Fuhai from China was unresponsive on the beach,” he said.
“We were told that beach guards went out on jet-skis to look for Mr Su after being told he had disappeared among the rocks. They managed to find him and brought him to shore.
“I have been told that the body of Mr Su has been taken to Prince of Songkhla University Hospital for doctors to determine the cause of death. It will probably take at least one month for test result to came back,” he added.
