The trio – Theera Ponkoh, 33, Wiroj Niyomchon, 33, and Jeerawut Homfung, 31 – arrived at the home shared by Lamom Santiparadon, 59, her daughter Tharathip, 40, and Ms Tharathip’s nine-month-old baby.
There, the gang encountered Mrs Lamom and demanded to see “Nok” which is Ms Tharathip’s nickname.
When Ms Tharathip came out of the house carrying her baby, the gang demanded payment from her as guarantor for a B20,000 loan made to a grilled pork vendor. She denied this, which made them angry. One of them punched her in the face, knocking her and her baby to the ground.
Her mother tried to stop the attack and she too was punched to the floor. The men then left.
Shortly after, Ms Tharathip’s younger sister Benjamas arrived. Seeing her family members had been attacked, she ran out to seek help. As luck would have it, Police Officer Preecha Tancharoenrat was driving by. He pursued and caught the gang in their black Honda Jazz.
The three men admitted they had made a mistake in demanding payment from the wrong person.
They explained that they had had been hired by “a businessman in Krabi” to look after his affairs in Phang Nga, and had been told only to collect money from someone called “Nok” living in a green-painted house.
They added that they would be happy to pay some compensation to the family.
Ms Tharathip flatly refused this, adding that she wanted this case to be an example, highlighting the plight of many innocents who are attacked by “mafia”. She added that the illegal loan business in Phang Nga is now “a big issue”.
Phang Nga police therefore arrested the three on charges of illegal trespass, assault and loan sharking.
