Joy Dive – with a multinational team of players from Europe and Africa – secured a late victory in the Open Cup final against the Thanyapura team, with a single goal in extra time.
The winning goal came from a long range free kick that appeared to float into the penalty area – surprisingly no one in the crowded box managed to touch the ball, which casually bounced through the confusion and into the net.
The Songkran 7s victory was something of a consolation for Joy Dive, who’ve held close to the top of the table in the local Super Six soccer tournament this year, but eventually ended up taking third place in that league’s Division 1, behind Phuket Condos and Homes and Pita Bar Phuketeers.
Altogether 16 teams competed in this year’s Songkran International Soccer 7s.
The Open Bowl final was won by the Singapore Pirates, who defeated ST FC from Malaysia 2 – 1.
The Masters Cup final was won by Hong Kong All Stars, who defeated FFF Deals on Wheels from Dubai.
