It's official folks: Dane's the wurst

PHUKET: It was meant to be a showdown between The Phuket News’ Sports Editor Dane Halpin and Live 89.5FM’s breakfast host Sam Clarke, but Russian man Alexander Zavalnyy emerged top dog at last weekend’s Hot Dog Eating Competition.

Both Australian media gurus were quickly out of the game as Mr Zavalnyy surged into the lead, surpassing our lads and eventually managing to eat a whopping eight hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Dane ended up finishing on a disappointing four, while Sam ate five.

Mr Zavalnyy, who looked worse for wear at times during the competition, said he decided to enter on the day after seeing the crowd gathered at Home Pro Chalong.

He has lived in Phuket for 12 years training in Muay Thai, and this was his first attempt at an eating competition.

“I was walking around and I saw the competition, so I decided to enter. I wanted the prize money (B4,000) and some dinner too. I think I could have probably eaten more,” he said.

After the competition Mr Zavalnyy said he felt “not so good” along with a few expletives, and said he didn’t think he would eat for a couple of days afterward. His friend, Roman Tuturov took second prize while Andrew Xing from China was third.

In the B-Boy competition, Southgangsterz took the top prize, while Power Storm Crew placed second and Thep-Sar 007 third.
