Rescue workers, after rushing all four to hospital then had the grisly task of retrieving the sheered-off leg of the driver from the wreck.

The smash took place at around 2.30 am on Thepkrassattri Rd in the Baan Lipon area, scene of frequent high-speed accidents.

Arriving at the scene the police and rescue workers were confronted by the remains of a Toyota Corolla. The front half was mashed into a power pole while the rear was about five metres off.

The occupants, one woman and two men, were found close by, all critically injured. They were identified as Suchat Jongraks, 46, Sakul Kongchana, 51, and Suthep Kongchana, 57, all from Karon.

Mr Suthep was the driver, who was found with his leg severed at the shin. After sending the three to hopital, rescue workers then set about searching for the missing limb. They found it “stuck to the car’s accelerator pedal assembly”.

They pried it loose from the wreck and sent it immediately to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where Mr Suthep was already being treated.

Witnesses said the vehicle being driven southbound at high speed when the driver attempted to overtake another car and lost control.
