The bad weather is connected to two major storms in the region. Supertyphoon Jelawat, packing winds gusting up to 295 kilometres an hour, is to the east of the Philippines, moving northward and expected to hit Taiwan at the weekend.
Tropical storm Ewiniar, currently heading northeast along the coast of Japan, is less malevolent, generating winds around 85 kmh. Neither is expected to visit Thailand.
