Tourism Minister Somsak Phurisrisak said on Monday (April 29) that the idea of the Tourist Court was conceived in recognition of increasing instances of foreigners reporting they were robbed or otherwise harmed while traveling in Thailand.

Mr Somsak said the concept is now under discussion with Wirat Chinwinijkul, Secretary-General of the Courts of Justice.

He added that establishment of the court will begin in the form of a tourist department being set up as part of the Courts of Justice.

The Tourism Minister added that the discussion with Mr Wirat also included the possibility of a night court, in order to help speed up legal proceedings in cases involving visitors to Thailand.

Mr Somsak will also meet with National Police Chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew tomorrow (May 1). He will ask the police to handle all cases related to tourists more swiftly and with more determination so that subsequent court proceedings can be handled without undue delay.
