Mr Ashby was diagnosed last week with stage-three colon cancer and does not have medical insurance.
So far around B30,000 has been raised for the appeal, which will help go toward Mr Ashby’s treatment, expected to cost around B400,000 to B500,000.
The fundraiser will be held at the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, starting at 6.30 pm. There will be food, DJs and prizes up for grabs, as well as a raffle for a new Honda Wave motorbike.
Friend Ali Goebel said Mr Ashby was “humbled by the amazing response of care and support from the Phuket community.”
He is currently in Bangkok getting treatment advice, and an operation is scheduled for sometime next week.
Originally from South Africa, Mr Ashby has been living in Phuket for eight years and is an avid sailor, “known and loved throughout the expat community”, according to Mrs Goebel.
He has sailed in many Phuket regattas on board boats such as Delphina 2, Eos, Miss Saigon, Millennium and Babe, and competed in the Phang Nga Bay Regatta, Phuket Race Week, The King’s Cup Regatta and many Ao Chalong Yacht Club races over the past eight years.
