The first day of registration, Tuesday, saw three of of the candidates turn up promptly to lodge their papers. Pheu Thai Party members Wisit Jai-art and Samarn Kebsap signed up to run in Wards 1 and 2 respectively, while Jirayus Songyos from Bhumjaithai Party lodged his forms to run in Ward 2.
The following day predictably large crowds turned out to show their support for the two Democrat Party candidates, former Prime Minister’s Secretary Anchalee Vanich Thepabutra and former MP Rewat Areerob. Mrs Anchalee will contest Ward 1 (Phuket Town) while Mr Rewat will run in Ward 2 (the remainder of the island).
Some 200 people waited to give them garlands and flowers, shouting, “We love Democrats. Number 10!” – a reference to the party’s number in the poll.
The last day for registration will be Saturday (May 28), but it seems unlikely more candidates will appear.
Meanwhile, election posters have been going up all over the island. Democrat leader and caretaker PM Abhisit Vejjajiva is due to make a campaign speech at Saphan Hin this evening (May 27) at 6 pm to help support Mrs Anchalee and Mr Rewat.
