Border Patrol Police 426 teamed up with Region 8 Police and local defence officials who used vehicles to surround 29-year-old Mr Charnchaiyuth Krainara when he attempted to drive a Mitsubishi pickup truck to avoid arrest. Charnchaiyuth pulled out a M67 grenade and was about to throw it at police when he was shot by an officer.

Police have said Charnchaiyuth was one of the biggest drug dealers in the province.

At 9:30 pm last night, Krabi Police Deputy Commander Col Boontawee Toraksa led a team of officers including forensic police to investigate the shooting of a drug suspect in front of a shop on Ruamjaichon Rd in Krabi Yai sub district.

Upon arrival, police found the body of the suspect lying face down on the road in the pool of blood. Charnchaiyuth had been shot once in the back of the neck, with the bullet coming out of his forehead. Close to the body was a live M67 grenade wrapped in tape.

Straight after the shooting officers closed the road and blocked off the area to prevent any vehicles passing through while an EOD team carried out an investigation.

It took the team one hour to safely deactivate and remove the grenade preventing it from exploding. Officers also collected more than 30 11mm and 9mm bullets heads from the road.

After the area was clear, Charnchaiyuth’s body was taken to Krabi Hospital.

On the body was a bag with B3000 cash and a bag of crystal meth (ya ice), police also found 11 bags of methamphetamine pills (ya bah) with 200 pills in each bag inside Charnchaiyuth’s pickup.

Col Boontawee said that Chanchaiyuth was one of the biggest drug dealers in Krabi and Surat Thani provinces. He was arrested before on drug charges and was released from prison three years ago. Police have been monitoring his activities since his release.

“Prior to the shooting incident, undercover officers agreed to buy drugs from Chanchaiyuth and arranged for a delivery at this location. When he arrived and found his client was a police officer he attempted to get away so police surrounded his vehicle using theirs,” Col Boontawee said.

“Police shot at the getaway vehicle and Charnchaiyuth reversed and slammed his vehicle into a patrol vehicle. Chanchaiyuth then lowered his window and flashed a grenade. He came out of his vehicle, pulled out the pin and was ready to throw it at officers when he was shot.

Police revealed that during the shootout two women were in the suspect’s vehicle .They were taken to the Border Patrol Police Station for questioning.

Kurt...Try thinking about drug dealers being monitored to obtain further evidence that will stand up in court or intelligence purposes - where drugs are coming from and by whom - who are the "runners" etc. This is normal Police procedure.

You have no idea of why Police shot the man. Generally, where an officer believes on reasonable grounds/or has probable cause - that his/her life or member of the public is in immediate danger he/she may use deadly force ie shoot and kill you. To a lesser extent this is also afforded to a normal citizens on the basis of proportionality. So if one produces a hand grenade and pulls the pin and starts to throw it, or produces a water pistol which I believe to be a real firearm, I, or anyone with half a brain, certainly ain't going to stand around and wait for it go off or for you to shoot me. I will shoot you and be justified in doing so.

Like a trespasser, I am given the right to physically remove you (an assault), but not kill you as it is not proportional to the offence of trespass.

Aha, colonel boontawee said that chanchaiyut was one of the biggest drug dealers in Krabi and Surathani provinces.
Question: with that knowledge, why was this 'biggest' drug dealer for so long walking/working freely and allowed to do his business?
For 3 years, after his release from prison.
You not become 'biggest' drug dealer in 1 day.
RTP is chatter boxing to much, indirect very good in informing the public about 'live and let live' about this well known biggest drug dealer.
And why was that?

Police was monitoring this big drug dealer already 3 years!
Monitoring only? Why?

Suspect runned away, why shooting at him as police know who it was?
And there was no shootout. Only the police was shooting.

Guess swerve/thai joe12 is jumping to react. hehehehe.

Ed...with all your dumb questions and statements, why not take over the investigation? Can't you work things out for yourself?

In the article we red that the pin was out, but the grenade was taped, and that is why the grenade didn't go off.

Why the grenade was taped we will never know.
For me it fit's in the chapter..'thainess'.. (illogical)

Jeez, what a fiasco. One of the biggest drug dealers, and only 3,000 baht on him??? I wonder who the lucky police chief was that got to search the pockets? And good question by malczx7r, why didn't blow if the pin was pulled?

He pulled the pin and was just about to throw it, then they shot him, why didn't the grenade go off then??
