No one was inside the camp at the time when the fire started – the workers were already at another construction site – but all their belongings were destroyed in the blaze.

More than 20 firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Department at Phuket International Airport (PIA), along with firefighters from the Mai Khao Fire Station, were called to the fire, near the Centara Grand West Sand Resort and Villas and just in front of Splash Jungle Waterpark.

They rushed to the scene but the fire was well involved by the time they arrived, and the housing area was already destroyed.

“We put out the fire by around 9.30am, but there was nothing left – everything had turned to ash,” said

Somboon Satae, a firefighter from the Fire and Rescue Department of PIA said.

Pol Capt Santi Prakobpran, of the Tha Chat Chai police, told The Phuket News this afternoon that the police did not yet know what caused the fire, but investigation teams have been to the site to inspect it.
