Cabinet approves five-year plan to cut antibiotic use, reduce drug resistance deaths

THAILAND: The cabinet has approved an action plan by the Public Health Ministry aimed at cutting the use of antibiotics in the healthcare scheme to reduce drug resistance by half by 2021.

Cabinet approves five-year plan to cut antibiotic use, reduce drug resistance deaths

Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday cabinet members had approved a plan for 2017-2021 aimed at reducing the surge of antimicrobial resistance in the country.

Proposed by the Ministry of Public Health, the plan aims to cut drug resistance by 50%.

It will also increase awareness of safe use of antibiotics among the public by 20%, he added.

More than 38,000 people succumb each year to drug resistance from various illnesses and the number is likely to increase, Maj Gen Sansern said.

Drug-resistant infections cause economic and social losses, Maj Gen Sansern said, adding resistance to antibiotics means treating once basic illnesses becomes more difficult and costly.

The main factor in drug-resistant infections in the country is excessive use of antibiotics bought over the counter, he said adding some people do not know how to use medicine properly.

Antibiotics are easily bought over the counter, he said.

Maj Gen Sansern said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had ordered the Public Health Ministry to speed up its plan.

The premier also urged health personnel to educate the public about proper use of antibiotics, adding the ministry should work on increasing of the use of traditional Thai medicines among Thais.

Got a cold or flu virus- take  50 - 150 mg zinc,  (depending on weight) with food, (or risk stomach ache.) Do it again in 4 hours and if you feel better,  dose  one more time- if not, then stop- it is not a virus. I swear by this cure, have used it for decades. Of course the real way to prevent cold and flu is to keep your fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth at all times- hand washing is good, but not as effective.

Thinking about it, why has to take this a thai 5 year plan?
Declare it as immediately effective, with a 1 year time to executive fully.
After 1 year the new regiem is 100% effective by health laws.

5 Years, and than, after 5 years, another 5 years?
( we need more thai time?)

Time is one of Thailand's greatest enemies. In everything.

Glad to read this.  Pity, 20 years to late.
In many SEA countries they throw around antibiotics like candies.
People in Thailand go to small clinics for a cough and running nose and depart with a bag full antibiotica stuff.
While a glass warm water with 1 teaspoon salt for gurgling throat and inhaling through the nose is already fine to cure.
( grandmother's recipe ).
