The third game in a series, Super Metroid was released in 1994 to widespread acclaim and is consistently ranked as one of the top video games of all-time.
The story takes place on the planet of Zebes with the user controlling Samus Aran, one of the best female protagonists in any game to date.
As Samus, the gamer has to search for a Metroid, a large organism that has energy absorbing properties with the intention of bringing it to a lab to use it for good intentions.
The game was lauded for its dramatic plot, weird (but amazing) enemies, and for pushing the boundaries of what an action-adventure game can be.
Super Metroid also pioneered the art of auto-mapping, helping give gamers a better sense of their game environment.
Though it has received countless accolades, Super Metroid was developed by a team of just 15 people. Compare that to the team of 70 working on the upcoming World of Darkness.
Despite its success, Nintendo decided not to make another Metroid game for eight years until Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion in 2002.
Electronic Gaming Monthly named Super Metroid the Best Game of All Time in 2003, and IGN ranks it third in its Top 100 of All Time list.
GamesRadars list of the ‘Best Super Nintendo Games of All Time’ put Super Metroid at number one, beating out the equally awesome Chrono Trigger.
