Mega Man X was the first Mega Man game for the 16-bit console in the Super Nintendo and gameplay was set over 100 years after the events in the original gaming series.

The game followed Mega Man X, an android member of a military task forced called upon to stop other robots known as “Mavericks” – led by the powerful villan Sigma – who wanted to eradicate all humankind.

The eight stages in the game could be completed in any order with gamers acquiring a new weapon after defeating each of the eight bosses.

Though it has a simple premise and a relatively short completion time, the game went on to gain cult status since it was one of the first games that gave gamers 3D graphics and excellent sound. It also started the trend of discovering hidden items and power-ups.

The game was also noted for having an intricate enough map that, upon completion of certain stages, affected the way other levels were played. For example, clearing the aircraft carrier stage will cause electrical outages in the power plant stage.

Several gaming magazines and websites have given Mega Man X high rankings and it was included in Nintendo Power’s “100 Best Nintendo Games of All Time” list.

Since 1993, 10 other games in the series have been produced.
