“The ‘Approaches to Earning’ programme is designed to offer students the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the world of work as part of their education,” said Bevin Clark, careers and college counsellor at BIS Phuket.
“We hope to provide the BIS Phuket students with a memorable and unique educational experience. We match students to companies or organisations as carefully as possible.”
Mr Clark says that all of the 80 Year 10 students have now submitted their ‘wish list’ of careers they’re interested in exploring during their Work Experience Week, so now the challenge is to find placements so that the students can be offered their first choice of industry.
“We are asking for help from the Phuket community to provide our students with interesting, enjoyable and challenging work placements.
“We are seeking jobs for students at entry level in a wide variety of fields, including media and journalism, law, medicine and health, hotel management, hospitality and catering, engineering, architecture and interior design, product design, fashion design and retailing, marketing and public relations, teaching, fitness and sport, information technology, banking and finance, diplomacyand many more,” says Mr Clark.
Likely activities that employers might engage students with are writing articles, designing rooms, developing software programmes or designing a new publicity poster. Not to forget making the odd cup of tea.
The BIS Phuket Approaches to Earning work experience week for Year 10 students (14 and 15 year olds) takes place from Monday June 10 through Friday June 14, 2013.
Generally, a minimum of two students are placed per workplace. Organisations may accept larger numbers of students if they can be accommodated.
If you have a workplace and could offer this experience to two or more Year 10 students from BIS Phuket, please contact Bevin Clark for more information (bclark@bisphuket.ac.th or phone 076 335 555).
All participating organisations will be sent a copy of the ‘Approaches to Earning’ Manual which outlines the school’s expectations of the students and provides some ideas which can be useful to employers in guiding the students successfully through the week.
BIS Phuket carries accident insurance for the students whilst they are placed with their employers.
