The game was very open and attacking as both sides found lots of space in midfield. Djuvoski and Siaka both pushed forward for the home side in the first half, yet rarely looked close to finding the net.
It appeared that the half would finish goalless but two late strikes from Evergrande forward Muriquiin the space of three minutes shocked the Thai champs.
Both goals were excellently taken by the foreign striker and displayed the gap in defensive concentration that Muangthong will need to work on for next year’s campaign.
Still the ‘Quilins’ came out attacking in the second half and a headed goal by exciting young attacking-midfielder Sarawut temporarily gave the home side hope.
It was short lived however, as a third goal for Guangzhou came within minutes and the end was sealed five minutes before full time when Xiaoting scored a tap-in for the Chinese side.
While the final score is harsh on Muangthong, the whole ACL campaign has served as an education for the Thai Champions in how they need to improve if they wish to be a true competitor amongst Asia’s finest football squads.
Defensive lapses and a low conversion rate of chances have punished Muangthong throughout the campaign.
Slavisa will surely be looking to sign at least one top defender and possibly a replacement or back up for Teerasil before mounting another challenge.
