Asean countries need to work together for a better South East Asia

PHUKET: Asean Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan and Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri, along with senior officials from 10 other countries met at Movenpick resort yesterday (6 June) to discuss ways in which to boost collective revenue and stabilise economies while minimising the spread of diseases such as AIDS, when ASEAN Economic Community is established in 2015.

Also discussed during the afternoon of meetings between the participating countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was how to properly regulate and control the import and export of tobacco and alcohol and other produce.

Responding to the fact that the ASEAN's top four diseases were coronary artery disease, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer and AIDS, Minister Witthaya said, "Each country needs to announce how it plans to reduce tobacco, alcohol and sexually transmitted infections and promote more healthy activity."

He also stressed that it would be much easier to achieve these results if the ASEAN participating countries worked together.
