Mr Heras was on the back of a motorbike being driven by his friend Ludovi Didier Donny, who crashed at high speed on the road through Karon. Mr Donny died.

A nurse said that Mr Heras has severe bruising to his brain and lungs, a broken jaw and multiple fractures to his left leg.

Before any operations can be performed the surgical team wants to ensure adequate supplies of A-negative blood.

Although A-negative blood is quite common in Caucasian populations – about 15 per cent have it – it is rare among Asians, occurring in only three people in a thousand.
