18-wheeler runs amok, one killed
PHUKET: An 18-wheel truck side-swiped a pick-up on Thepkrassattri Rd in Baan Lipon last night (August 7) before ploughing into a noodle shop and killing one of the people sitting there.

At least six people were injured in the smash.

Police officers reported that the pick-up, a white Phuket-registered Mazda, was travelling in the north-bound lane, carrying a family of five. The tractor-trailer slammed into it, causing it to crash into the roadside noodle shop, killing 50-year-old Daruwan Tantirangsimapan, a nurses’ assistant at Vachira Phuket Hospital. Injured was 12-year-old Chayanont Kientireuangris, who along with Ms Daruwan was enjoying supper at the noodle shop.
Injured in the pick-up truck were Pol Manisri, 11; Sasima Manisri, 37; Pirapongs Manisri, 40; Pasathorn Manisri, 9; and Rerm Manisri, 74, all from Sri Soonthorn Moo 1. Rescue workers took about one hour to cut the driver free.
Police said that after the crash the truck driver fled the scene. Police gave no details of its ownership.
